This is practiced by the Krio Muslims as a religious rite, according to Koranic Law. It is practiced in the Western area of Sierra-Leone.
Type II - Excision
Excision is practiced by the rest of the ethnic communities over the country. It is performed as part of an initiation rite in which girls are elevated from childhood to womanhood: During the past few years some communities performed the practice on younger girls and even on female babies between the age of one week and one year. The Susu tribe practice this type.
