What Was the Driving Force Behind European Imperialism in Africa?

(C) For several centuries, Europe never bothered themselves with Africa, except for the business of slave trading. However when the New Imperialism began in the late 19th century, it struck hard and fast. Within only a few decades nearly the entire continent was carved into European colonies. Much of the partition took place at the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885. Here, European nations laid down the rules for dividing up Africa. Not a single African was represented at this conference. From a 21st century point of view, this seems like a selfish thing to have done, so why did Europeans engage in imperialism? Certainly, political, cultural, and economic factors all played a role.
