8. How was Papen able to convince Hindenburg that Hitler could be controlled? So on 30th January 1933, the aging President Hindenburg appointed Hitler as Chancellor. Hitler was delighted! He had now won the second most powerful job in Germany. He knew it would only be a matter of time before Hindenburg died, triggering a Presidential election. All Hitler had to do was wait. Then with the President’s powers he could begin dismantling democracy and establish a dictatorship.
10. Why was Hitler so sure that being made Chancellor was the first step on the road to dictatorship? Hindenburg was dead by 1935 and Hitler combined the office of Chancellor with that of President and became the Fuhrer – leader of Germany.
