The job of the inner circle is to discuss; the job of the outer circle is listen and critique the inner circle’s discussion. After about 20 minute, switch the inner and outer circles.
The teacher serves as timekeeper ( I give a five minute warning.) The teacher does not participate in the discussion except to ask the first question ( sort of like a jump ball question).
After the 20 minutes, ask for 3-4 comments from the outer circle about what they noticed or what surprised them about the discussion they observed. Then switch the inner and outer circles.
