1855Court of Claims - This was established by Congress to allow private parties to sue the United States for violation of contracts. A number of Indian tribes and individuals subsequently filed suits for treaty violations involving the taking of land in the Court of Claims. As the suits progressed, Congress perceived the danger of potential Indian claims and amended the Court of Claims statute to exclude those deriving from treaties. Another century would pass before any systematic process would be available for hearing claims of illegal land taking. This action was clearly one of the unfair practices that allowed the victimization of tribes.
