Part 1: Introduction (20 minutes) Pass out the article (Student Handout 1) on wildfires and a KWL sheet. Have the students create a KWL sheet based on the reading.
Show pictures of the 3 types of wildfires from the powerpoint and have students discuss the different types of wildfires in pairs as well as which is more common in the historic forest vs. the present day. Then discuss their findings as a class. Lead this into a discussion as to why the type of wildfire has changed in the forest, based on the matchstick forest lab and what they know about the differences.
