14.15 Dr Ann Buckley (Trinity College Dublin), ‘Music in Ireland in the time of Brian Boru’

While no Irish manuscripts with music notation have survived from before the twelfth century, a wealth of information on the social role of music and musicians may be gleaned from written and iconographic sources, as well as from actual musical instruments found through archaeological excavation. As a result, we are in a good position to imagine the types of music being performed in Ireland of the 10th/11th centuries. This presentation will explore some of the repertories of music-making and the wider soundscape which Brian Boru and his circle might have experienced in church and hall, as well as in public spaces and on the battlefield.
