Direct quotation = using exact words

When you quote:



  1. Know why – Be clear about your purpose: will you use the quote as support, or will you critique its ideas?

  2. Quote sparingly – Keep your quotes to less than 10% of your word count. Only choose quotes that do or say exactly what you wish to express.

  3. Integrate quotes – Introduce quotes and follow them up with a discussion.

  4. Use quotation marks for short quotes; block text for long quotes – Enclose short quotes in quotation marks. Set off long quotes in block text, without quotation marks.

  5. Reference appropriatelyInclude page numbers, using the required citation style.

Paraphrasing = significantly rewording ideas
