In mid-August, two months into the invasion march Napoleon / Hitler was confronted with the decision of whether to concentrate the two-month old invasion in the head (St. Petersburg / Leningrad), the heart (Moscow) or the feet (Kiev / Stalingrad) of Russia. The weeklong delay he took deciding and the resulting misdirection of troops was time lost that turned out to be a decisive factor when, in the coming weeks during his Moscow campaign, Russia's notoriously brutal weather auspiciously intervened to aid the Russian resistance and defeat his invading army.
