FDR began the speech saying: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” I believe this quote shows proof that the citizens were effective by this speech. Beginning the speech saying something as courageous as the quote really shows that he was ready to change something in America. Throughout the speech FDR exposes our weaknesses and encourages the citizens to conquer them. “Yet our distress comes from no failure of substance. We are stricken by no plague of locusts. Compared with the perils which our forefathers conquered because they believed and were not afraid, we have still much to be thankful for.” “Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.”

FDR gave the speech to help guide the American people out of the Great Depression. Confronting with our weaknesses and giving the American people a solution.

Throughout the speech FDR alerted the public people not to be afraid “The basic thought that guides these specific means of national recovery is not narrowly nationalistic. It is the insistence, as a first consideration, upon the interdependence of the various elements in all parts of the United States--a recognition of the old and permanently important manifestation of the American spirit of the pioneer.”
