Estimate of the number

The estimated number of individuals composing the Greek minority is a complex and problematic. The latest official data on the number of Greek speakers and Orthodox in Turkey dates at 1965. Census realized in 1985 contained questions about the confession, but the results were never published. Therefore, semi-official estimations came up about the number of Greeks in Turkey which can vary from 3,000 to 10,000 people, depending on the position that we want to defend and depending on what we understand by "Greek-Orthodox.

There are four possible counts of these people:

  • Only Greek-speaking Greek-Orthodox of Istanbul: their number is certainly around 3 000.

  • Greek-speaking Greek-Orthodox of Istanbul with Greek Orthodox of Tenedos and Imvros: is almost 3 500.

  • We can add these two communities, the Orthodox and Arab immigrated and settled in Istanbul: the figures vary, for the time being between 4 000 and 5 000

  • Finally, the number of all Turkish citizens who have inscribed 'Greek Orthodox' religion on their identity card is about 8000-10000.
