               The conquest of Ireland

 

Two Irish kings, Dermont MacMurrough and O’Rourke, were fighting for O’Rourke’s wife. MacMurrough asked the English king for help. The English king agreed to support him if he swears to serve the English king. So in 1171 the English king Heinrich 2. In 1297 an Irish parliament was founded by the English crone but the decisions needed the agreement of the English king. In 1541 Ireland was no longer just a “colony” of England peculiar a real part of England. Although England attached all catholic churches because they wanted the Irish to became Protestants. The English king Edward 6. settled many English people in Ireland. In 1560 many more English people came and the English military fought against the Irish resistance fighters. But the English soldiers couldn’t defeat the Irish resistance fighters because they used guerrilla warfare and this kind of warfare wasn’t known by the English army. When Hugh O’Neill was leader of the resistance in 1595 they could win two very important battles: the battle of Clontibret and the battle by the Yellow Fords side. But Lord Mountjoy destroyed the farms and killed the sheep and cows so the resistance fighter hadn’t no food anymore. But they got help by the Spanish crone in form of 3500 Spanish soldiers. With them they tried to end the siege of Ulster but they were hit crushing by the English soldiers. In 1603 O’Neill negotiate with the English general because of peace treaty but for this Ireland had to serve the English kingdom one more. Four Years later the Earls of Ireland flee. So the English crone settled more Scottish and English people in Ireland and most settled in the north-east of Ireland around Derry which they called Londonderry. Many catholic irish people were for all economical results afraid about the political growth in england under Karl 1st.1632 Thomas Wentworth was appointed Lord Deputy and helped the irish people a bit. 1641 Karl 1st let execute Wentworth under pressure of the parliament. Gaelic irish people in November 1641 began to fight against the english settlers. As in January 1642 Karl 1st let arrest some members of the parliament th british civil war began. 1642 Gaelic Irish and royal English settlers founded the Confederation of Kilkenny they wanted a Catholic Ireland. 1648 the scottish people who life in Ireland membered the Confederation of Kilkenny. Karl 1st was execute in 1649. Until 1652 two cities were destroyed Drogheda and Wexford. Now the civil war ended. The prisoner were shipped in the Carribean as slaves. 1660 the monarchy came back to England under the Stuard family.
