For the Africans, the middle passage, the time spent aboard ships between West Africa and the Americas, was a horrendous journey. Most slaves on board the ships were given small food rations. Those who were sick or weak were often left to die. Ships were packed with as many slaves as possible, leaving little room to move about. Slaves (particularly men) were bound in chains. Disease spread rapidly. As a result, some Africans threw themselves overboard rather than face these inhumane conditions. An estimated 10 million to 11 million Africans were sold into slavery throughout all of the Americas.”
