Teaching Practice Tool: Supporting on-going changes in student thinking (often referred to as Discourse 2 or “D2”)
Purpose of tool? 1) To ensure students understand why the activity makes sense to do at this point in the unit. 2) To help students bridge the activity with a larger scientific idea. 3) To support the development of students’ academic language, using the activity as a context.

When to use tool? When you are engaging students in a meaningful activity in order to build content knowledge and understand a scientific phenomenon.
