Dear Parent / Guardian
Thank you for your interest in the club and for allowing your child to take part in our play project.
The Spitalfields City Farm Young Farmers' Club is for all local children aged 8-13 on Saturdays from 10.30am-3.30pm and 10.30 – 4pm April-September. We operate summer and winter hours to ensure that children leave the farm before it begins to get dark.
We also run and afterschool club which on Thursdays from 3.30pm till 5.30pm over term time. A school pick up service from local schools if available if requested.
The service gives local children an opportunity to care for farm animals, make new friends, take part in gardening activities, do arts & crafts, play sports and team games and go on outings and trips, such as ice-skating and bowling.
About Play at the Young Farmers Club.
Playwork and the role of the playworker

Playwork recognises the importance of risk in children's play and playworkers actively support play opportunities that offer risk and challenge to the children. Experienced playworkers' role in managing risk requires professional judgement regarding when and how to intervene in children's play. They should be aware of not disrupting the play unnecessarily while ensuring the children aren't exposed to unacceptable risks.

Other roles of the playworker include acting as an advocate for children and children's play, building relationships and networks, undertaking organisational and project development tasks.

Particular significance is given to skills both in observation of children's play and reflective practice in order to improve the play environment, provision or playwork practice. A number of practitioners and settings have developed tools and practices which aid observation and reflective practice such as reflective diaries recorded by individuals or groups.

The playworker is engaged with enabling or facilitating play opportunities. The way that they do this is characterised as ‘low intervention, high response'. That is, the playworkers should do everything possible to ensure that choice and control of their play stays with the child. Playworkers make themselves available to respond to the needs or the invitation of the child.

The degree of ‘enabling' a playworker might do depends on the needs, personality, age and ability of the child or children - or even just the mood of the children on a particular day.

Playwork Principles

1 All children and young people need to play. The impulse to play is innate. Play is a biological,

psychological and social necessity, and is fundamental to the healthy development and well being of

individuals and communities.

2 Play is a process that is freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated. That is, children

and young people determine and control the content and intent of their play, by following their own instincts,

ideas and interests, in their own way for their own reasons.

3 The prime focus and essence of playwork is to support and facilitate the play process and this should

inform the development of play policy, strategy, training and education.

4 For playworkers, the play process takes precedence and playworkers act as advocates for play when

engaging with adult led agendas.

5 The role of the playworker is to support all children and young people in the creation of a space in which

they can play.

6 The playworker’s response to children and young people playing is based on a sound up to date

knowledge of the play process, and reflective practice.

7 Playworkers recognise their own impact on the play space and also the impact of children and young

people’s play on the playworker.

8 Playworkers choose an intervention style that enables children and young people to extend their play. All

playworker intervention must balance risk with the developmental benefit and well being of children.

Open Access

Spitalfields Young Farmers Club runs an ‘Open Access’ facility. This means that our gates are always open and the children may come and go as they please. The important distinguishing feature of open access facilities is that we provide play provision rather than childcare provision. Whilst the child is on farm, as far as is practical, we will endeavour to endure the safety and wellbeing of the child. However if the children leave the site of their own free-will we can not be responsible for them. We do not undertake to keep the child until he/she is collected. The full responsibility of the care of the child ceases when they leave the farm site without a staff member.
Behaviour
At the Young Farmer’s Club, we like to ensure that all the children feel safe and comfortable in each others company, and we therefore have a behavioural policy. In simple terms this states that if a child is displaying unacceptable behaviour they will be given time out. If the behaviour continues to be unacceptable the child will asked to leave the session and the parents will be informed. Continual unacceptable behaviour will result in long term exclusion from the Young Farmers’s Club. Please complete section 8 over leaf, including signatures from both you and your child to confirm you are in agreement with this policy. This is compulsory for joining the Young Farmers Club, and an incomplete form will result in admission being denied.

In our work with children, the Farm commits itself to providing a safe and creative environment. Every child and young person is an important member of the group or activity that they attend.

Local Offsite Trips

The Farm has many interesting places such as museums, parks, adventure playgrounds all within walking distance. In addition the children like to go shopping for food provisions with a member of the Play staff. It would be impractical gain written consent forms in advance for every local trip, therefore, please be aware that by signing this registration form, you are consenting to the children being allowed to partake in local offsite trips from time to time.
Notice board and information
Please check the notice board regularly for any news such as offsite trips, play schemes and closures.

Cost

The Young Farmers Club is a free provision so there is no cost, however our budget is very limited. We welcome a suggested voluntary donation of £3 per session towards additional costs such as lunch and other materials and equipment.
Registration

Please find attached a registration form that you will need to complete if your child wishes to become a member. The information you provide will enable us to ensure your child will receive the care they require, whether dietary, medical or otherwise and will allow us to know if you give consent for your child to travel home from the club unsupervised.

We would be grateful if you could complete the additional information in section 9 about your child. This information is used for monitoring purposes and enables us to provide statistics to the Tower Hamlets Children's Fund (they provide funding for the Young Farmers' Club and use the information you supply to evaluate the project and to ensure that our project is inclusive). All the information is confidential.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.
We look forward to seeing your child at the project!
Best Wishes,
Alia Sulaiman
