Ancient Rome Scavenger Hunt

You are on a scavenger hunt to find information about Ancient Rome. Your quest will exist on the web and will consist of some internet sight-seeing and inquiry of the wonders of Ancient Rome. Use the sites listed below, as well as some sites you stumble across on your own. You will be graded on the accuracy and depth of your responses.
World Book Web Questions:

Use the World Book Web to answer as many of these questions as possible. To log on, go to www.iowaaeaonline.org and click on “World Book Web”. The username is 4784109. The password is aea09. Use any of the three World Book options.


Colosseum:

  1. What did the Colosseum look like? Describe in three sentences

  2. What purpose did it serve?

  3. Who went to the Colosseum?

  4. How many people could fit in the Colosseum?

  5. On a separate sheet of paper, draw a picture of what the Colosseum looks like today.

Gladiators:

  1. What types of people usually became gladiators?

  2. Where was the first gladiator game fought?

  3. Where else were gladiator games fought?

  4. In what year were gladiator battles outlawed?

The Forum:

  1. What purpose did the Roman Forum serve?

  2. What was the area of the Roman Forum used for in the earliest days of the empire?

  3. How did the buildings of the Roman Forum get destroyed?

Catacombs:

  1. How did the tradition of the catacombs start in Rome?

  2. What role did Christianity play in the burial tradition of the catacombs?

  3. Describe one painting from one of the Roman catacombs.


Google Earth: Answer the following questions by using Google Earth. It has been downloaded to the desktop. In Google Earth, go to “Layers” at the bottom left of the screen. Deselect all options. Expand the “Gallery” tab and select “Ancient Rome 3D.” Type in Rome, Italy in the “Fly To” tab at the top left of the screen. Use the slider on the right to magnify the area. Choose 3 locations in Ancient Rome to explore.

Society:

  1. What did male Roman citizens have to do every five years?

  2. What was Roman society centered around (politically speaking)?

  3. What was the name typically given to the poorer sections of town?

The Army:

  1. What were the names given to the three lines of soldiers in a Roman Phalanx?

  2. Describe one of the commonly used tactics of the Roman Army.

  3. How did Scipio contribute to the Roman Army?

Emperors: Read the section that highlights Roman emperors and choose one of the emperors to evaluate:

  1. What style of leadership did he employ?

  2. How did this contribute to the success or decline of the Roman Empire?
