GENE TRANSFER:

Other cotton crops

Low

See Appendix 5

  • gene transfer would not pose any risks additional to the low risks posed by the GM cotton itself.

Yes

1) Locations of the release: ensure the release occurs far from other cotton

2) Limit scale: decreases likelihood of pollen and seed dispersal;

3) Surround the GM cotton with a pollen trap: minimises spread of the introduced genes beyond the release sites via pollen flow;

4) Impose containment, transport and storage conditions: decreases likelihood of spread and hence gene transfer;

5) Cleaning of equipment and release sites: clean equipment used in the release and destroy the GMO and GM material from the release site when no longer required destroys the source of pollen;

6) Inspection for volunteers: any volunteers detected during inspection must be destroyed to prevent before flowering to prevent pollen spread; and

7) Further research: validates efficacy of containment measures.

Yes

1) Location of the release: provide details of the locations;

2) Limit scale: restrict area to a total of 10 hectares at 30 sites, of no more than 1 hectare;

3) Surround the GM cotton with a pollen trap: non-genetically modified cotton must be grown on an area of land extending at least 20 m in all directions from the outside of the release site;

4) Containment, transport and storage of GMOs and material from the GMO as per the OGTR guidelines;

5) Clean equipment and release sites: cleaning equipment used in the release and destroying the GMO and GM material from the release site when no longer required;

6) Inspection for volunteers: conduct periodic inspections for volunteers at least once every 2 months for a period of 12 months. Any volunteers identified must be destroyed; and

7) Require further research: conduct gene transfer studies in the 20m pollen trap surrounding the GMO.
