Civil War Battle Research Project



Purpose: The purpose of this project is to reinforce the research and speaking skills of the students, and to allow for a deeper understanding of the Civil War Battles.

Task: You will be working with a partner to choose and research a battle from the American Civil War. This presentation will be the basis for the rest of the class’ understanding of the major Civil War battles and their importance to the history of the United States. There are several components and requirements for the successful completion of this required project. (150 points)


  • A 4 to 8 minute oral presentation (10 Points) to the rest of the class, which includes the following:

    • Origins of the Battle (15 points)

      • Events leading up to it

      • How the armies met

      • Why they chose that area/importance of the place?

      • Dates of the battle

    • Map of the Battle and the overall area it took place in (state) (5 points)

    • Major leaders and Important individuals (15 points)

      • Confederate and Union leaders

      • Heroes of the Battle

      • Battle Most Valuable Person (MVP)

    • Key weapons and strategies/tactics used (15 points)

      • New or most valuable weapon

      • Tactics or strategies used by each side

        • Why they were used and what were the results of it

      • Game changer tactic (what won or lost the battle)

    • Main events that took place during the course of the battle (15 points)

    • Images associated with the battle and its aftermath (5 points)

      • People involved, places, & events

  • Written outline of all the essential information for the presentation (15 points)

    • Must be well organized and cannot be more than 5 or 6 words per line. Keep it short!

  • Bibliography: MLA Formatting of at least 3 sources (15 points)

  • Peer evaluation for the project (10 points)

  • After action report or letter. One partner will write the report from the Union perspective and the other partner will write the report from the Confederate perspective. (30 points)

    • Collins Type 3 Writing: Must be at least 3 paragraphs and include the following parts

      • Paragraph 1: greeting or heading, events leading up to the battle, background on the person, etc…

      • Paragraph 2: description of a main event in the battle, which is the same in both accounts, just seen from opposing perspectives

      • Paragraph 3: what happens after that event, final thoughts/feelings, ask for advice, etc…
