Primary source: A source or piece of information about a historical event that was created at the time of the event, or by a person involved in the event.
Secondary source: A source that was created after the time of the event, by someone who did not participate in the historical event or period


Primary Source

Example:

  • Newspaper or magazine articles written at the time of the topic

  • Letters or diaries written at the time of the topic

  • Government records

  • Autobiographies

  • Photographs, songs, paintings, or other works of art made at the time of the topic

  • Interviews with participants in the event

  • Quotes about the event made at the time that it happened
