Global climate change will become increasingly important. The quantities of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere will increase, and the window of opportunity for preventing global climate change will close. International efforts will increasingly focus on slowing and mitigating changes underway. The increase in global CO2 levels will be exacerbated by rapid industrialization in many developing countries, especially China. Response to global warming could lead to major changes in agricultural production patterns or energy policies.
Globally, there will be decreasing availability of arable land currently cultivated, due to urban encroachment, conservation needs, non-sustainable farming practices, and soil degradation. This will increase the pressure on agricultural productivity, open new lands that may be less suitable for agriculture and/or will continue to increase species extinction pressures, especially in developing countries.
