Candy’s repetition of the phrase, “Tell you what…” is an example of parallel structure. This is used to show the reader that Candy is the farm gossip.
“Tell you what, last guy that had this bed was a blacksmith- hell of nice fella and as clean a guy as you wanna meet. Used to wash his hands even after he ate.” (Steinbeck 19)
This is paralleled with Candy saying later on page 20 and 21, “Tell ya What- know what he done Christmas? Brang a gallon of whiskey right in here an’ says, ‘Drink hearty boys. Christmas comes but once a year.”
