Course Description and Rationale

The purpose of this course is to introduce you to the role that communication plays in complex organizations. The course investigates how communication is used in organizations and the effects that are produced. Specifically, we will look at five theoretical approaches to the study of communication in organizations. Those approaches are: classical, human relations/human resources, systems, cultural, and critical. Additionally, we will examine how communication contributes to the development and maintenance of the highly unique culture—and social reality—that constitutes an organizational workplace.
