No, I do not believe that the founding fathers envisioned that slavery would lead to the Civil War, in which hundreds of thousands of American citizens lost their lives. Although many of the Founding Fathers acknowledged that slavery denied men of the liberties and freedom granted in the Constitution, their commitment to private property rights, the limited role of government, and peace between the states prevented them from denouncing slavery. The significant involvement of Southern Founders in slave-based staple agriculture, combined with their deep-seated racial prejudice, posed additional obstacles to emancipation.
