An Occasional Newsletter of the North American Fichte Society

No. 18 March 2011

Dear friends and colleagues,
It has now been nearly two years since the appearance of Fichteana no. 17. During this period Fichte scholarship has continued to thrive around the world, as is evidenced by the many events and publications recorded below. The conferences that occurred during this period included the Seventh Congress of the International Fichte Association, which was held in Belgium, and the Tenth Meeting of the North American Fichte Society, which was held in Lisbon.

Two new volumes of the Bavarian Academy Critical Edition of Fichte’s writings have appeared during this period, as well as a new English translation, editied byYolanda Estes and Curtis Bowman, of the chief texts involved in the so-called "Atheism Controversy" of 1798-99 and a welcome reissue of Garrett Green's translation of the Attempt at a Critique of all Revelation, with a new Introduction by Allen Wood.

Several new issues of Fichte-Studien have also appeared during the past two years, along with several other yearbooks and special issues of journals devoted to Fichte. Two volumes containing proceedings of past meetings of the North American Ficthe Society – the Vienna meeting on "Fichte and the Phenomenological Tradition" and the Philadelphia meeting on "Fichte, German Idealism, and Early Romanticism" -- were also published within this period.

Further information on past and future conferences and events, as well as more information on new monographs and published articles, may be found in the sections of this newsletter devoted to the same. This issue also contains calls for papers for upcoming meetings: Including the eleventh biennial meeting of the North American Fichte Society, which will be held next May in Québec City, Canada.. This issue also contains reports on conferences and scholarly colloquia hold over the past two years.

Though this is (once again) the largest issue of Fichteana yet, it is surely less than complete, and the editor welcomes additions, supplements, and corrections, which will be noted in future issues of this newsletter. As always, information concerning things Fichtean, as well as suggestions, corrections, comments, and criticisms regarding the content and format of this newsletter are very welcome. Detailed information concerning recent and forthcoming publications and conferences -- and, if possible, copies of the former -- are cordially solicited, as is information regarding recent dissertations on Fichte.

The editor would like to express his sincere thanks to Wayne Martin, David W. Wood, Erich Fuchs, Marco Ivaldo, Norman Sieroka, Hitoshi Minobe, Masahiro Yamaguchi, and Jean-Christophe Goddard for their valuable contributions to this issue of Fichteana.
