Call for indigenous approach to conservation

Farmers from Peru and Ethiopia have called on policymakers to establish protected indigenous bio-cultural territories as areas for conserving and sustainably using agricultural biodiversity. The declaration, made at a workshop in Peru, appealed for recognition and respect for indigenous people and their rights to land, to biological, genetic and cultural resources, to define their own food production and consumption systems, and to safe and healthy food.

The participants highlighted the contribution of indigenous people to the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. Delegates also said that Agricultural Conservation Areas, that build on indigenous cultural traditions, promote sustainable livelihoods, reduce poverty and are critical for helping communities adapt to climate change.
