NATIONALISM AND SECTIONALISM

Ch. 11 Sec. 3

The North began to industrialize and the South relied more on growing cotton. The War of 1812 established a sense of Nationalism because we did so well in it and established ourselves a country. Nationalism unites the country.

NATIONALISM: a felling of pride, loyalty, and protectiveness toward your country.

1815, Pres. Madison presented a plan to Congress for making the US self-sufficient- The American System.

HENRY CLAY: from Kentucky was a strong Nationalist.

Wanted to strengthen the country and unify its different regions.

AMERICAN SYSTEM:

  1. Establish a protective tariff- import tax. This promotes American to buy American goods- keeping the money in America.

  2. Establish a national bank-1816- to help establish a single US currency. The 2nd Bank of American was going to make money through loans.

  3. Improve the country’s transportation systems

ERIE CANAL- created a water route between new Your City and Buffalo. It was 4 feet deep, 40 feet wide and 360 miles long.

The Cumberland road (National Road) was the major east/west thoroughfare. The period from 1825-1850 was the Age of Canals. The Erie Canal connects the Midwest to the East Coast to help trade. 1830’s there were 30 miles of railroad track, 1850 there was 9,000 miles of track. Steam engines were introduced in the 1830’s.

JAMES MONROE: won the presidency in 1816 as a Democratic-Republican.

Under Monroe, it was called the Era of Good Feelings. McCulloch vs. Maryland-1819-the State of Maryland wanted to tax the nation bank. The Supreme Court said that the states didn’t have the right to tax the national bank. Gibbons v. Ogden, The Court ruled that interstate commerce could only be regulated by the federal government.

The US wanted to define and expand the country’s boundaries. The Rush-Bagot Agreement limited Britain and Spain’s naval forces on the Great Lakes. The 49th parallel was set as the northern boundary of the US-1818. Seminole Indians were raiding Georgia. Gen. Andrew Jackson pursued the Indians into Florida and they laid claims to it. Adams-Onis Treaty, Spain handed Florida to the US.
SECTIONALISM: loyalty to the interests of your own region or section of the country, rather than to the nation as a whole.

The North didn’t believe in Slavery but the South was heavy connected to Slavery for farming cotton. Congress was balanced between slave and non-slave stated.

MISSOURI COMPROMISE: 1820

Adding Missouri would upset the balance between Free states and slave states in Congress. Henry Clay proposed that Maine be admitted as a free state and Missouri be admitted as a slave state. It banned slaver north of Missouri.

MONROE DOCTRINE: 1823

President Monroe created it; it said that the Americas were closed to further colonization. It showed that the US saw itself as a world power and protector of Latin America. Hands off the Western Hemisphere.
