Multicultural Lesson

This paper was prepared for TEDU 414 taught by Professor Domalik


Purpose:

This lesson is designed to expand the student’s knowledge of multicultural differences and commonalties using the traditional tale of Cinderella from different countries of the world. They need to understand the importance of accepting the differences of others and treat others with respect. The United States is a very diverse country and it is important that students recognize the diverse culture and being a good citizen is able to celebrate other cultures and customs.



SOL

  1. 1.10  The student will apply the traits of a good citizen by

    1. a)  focusing on fair play, exhibiting good sportsmanship, helping others, and treating others with respect;

    2. b)  recognizing the purpose of rules and practicing self-control;

    3. c)  working hard in school;

    4. d)  taking responsibility for one’s own actions;

    5. e)  valuing honesty and truthfulness in oneself and others;

    6. f)  participating in classroom decision making through voting.


Objective:

Given oral questions the students will be able to identify 1 difference and 2 similarities between the different Cinderella tales from around the word and draw a Cinderella of their choice.
Procedure:

Introduction:



  • The teacher will introduce the exercise by asking the students if they are familiar with the Cinderella story.

  • Ensure that the students have knowledge of the main idea, main character’s name, stepmother, three stepsisters, party, fairy godmother, and glass slippers by asking the students questions, reviewing, and having them help fill in the Venn diagram.

  • It will be explained to the students that Cinderella is a traditional tale that has been rewritten for children all over the world.

Development:



  • The Egyptian Cinderella version will be discussed and excerpts will be read (auditory) describing the main idea main character’s name (Rhodopis), master, three servants, great falcon, hold a court (dance), rose-red slipper, prince and events of the stories. Ensure that the students see the pictures from the book (visual).

  • Adelita: A Mexican Cinderella will be discussed and excerpts will be read (auditory) describing the main idea main character’s name (Adelita), Stepmother, 2 stepsisters, Esperanza, homecoming party (dance), glass slipper, prince and events of the stories. Ensure that the students see the pictures from the book (visual).

  • A graphic organizer comparative table will be used to show the differences and similarities between the two versions and the U.S. version (visual).
