The thesis has presented brief overview of the history of interaction between literature and film. The fusion of the two gave rise to many theories and different approaches towards literature as well as film. The general history of adaptation created background for detailed compilation of adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels, from which I choose Sense and Sensibility by Ang Lee to show the process of adaptation and its result. The fidelity of the film was questioned using Timothy Corrigan’s model. It showed the extent to which the settings and the characters were altered to meet the demands of modern audience. Majority of such changes are tenable, because modern audience is not familiar with the culture of the Regency era. Even Jane Austen herself was aware of the shift that perception of audience undergoes during some period of time. Therefore the thesis I stated at the beginning is valid.
