Don’t just throw your tree to the curb after the holidays…recycle it! Christmas trees will be chipped into mulch and used to help beautify the parks. Clean your tree of all decorations and tinsel, and drop it off at the following participating Summit County Metro Parks: Firestone, Furnace Run, Goodyear Heights, Sand Run, or Silver Creek.

Holiday Memories at Hower House

Winter Solstice Soup & Hike

Want a better way to enjoy the first day of winter? Join Naturalist Dave Brumfield to learn about the winter solstice as we enjoy soup together around the outdoor fireplace, followed by a short evening hike. Soup is provided. Bring a cup, spoon and flashlight.

Full Moon Walk: Cold Moon

12/28, 5:30-7pm, donation, The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave SW. Wilmot

Yep, it’ll be cold; but it’ll also get you away from the holiday rush for a quiet evening walk, the final full moon of the year. We’ll end this walk and the year’s series with coffee, cocoa and conversation inside. Dress for the weather. You may bring a flashlight, but try not to use it. We’ll cancel if it’s raining, snowing or the weather’s dangerous—check our Facebook page after 4pm if there’s any doubt. Free for TWC members; a donation is requested from nonmembers.

Bring your pint-sized party animals to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and let them dance until the break of noon! Kids of all ages can celebrate 2013's arrival during daylight hours at the seventh annual Noon Year's Eve party at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The family-friendly event runs from 10am to 1pm December 31. The Noon Year's Eve festivities include kid-friendly activities the whole family can enjoy. Watch a crew of charismatic critters in a special Noon Year's Eve Wild Animal Show. Make New Year's ReZOOlutions and an eco-friendly craft. Other activities include music, dancing, an ice-carving demonstration, costumed characters and more.

First Night Akron

First Night is a major visual performing arts festival created by and for the community to welcome the New Year. Akron is a New Year’s Eve celebration unlike any other! The family-friendly, alcohol-free celebration brings the community together to experience a brief moment in time while creating lasting New Year’s Eve memories. Entertainment and fun will delight the whole family!

Join naturalists for a morning filled with fun for the entire family. Crafts, activities and refreshments will help us ring in the New Year! Take a hike while you are here, then warm up by the campfire. Marshmallows are provided.

The City of Barberton hosts a FREE display of multi-colored holiday lights as part of the annual Lake Anna Holiday Light Display at Lake Anna Park in Barberton, Ohio from November 24–January 1. Lights are turned on at 5pm daily and remain on until 9pm Sunday through Thursday evenings, and until 10pm on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays.

The lighting display at the GE Lighting Center in Nela Park in East Cleveland has been a holiday tradition since 1925. The elaborate display lines GE's property along Noble Road from early December through New Year's Day.

Tobogganing on Ice

Now–2/28, $4-10, Cleveland Metroparks Chalet in Mill Stream Run Reservation, 16200 Valley Parkway, Strongsville

Enjoy the thrill of tobogganing down twin ice chutes—over 1000 feet long with a drop of 70 feet! In addition to tobogganing, guests can enjoy the facility with a snack bar, two fireplaces, a large-screen television, indoor restrooms and a main gathering area.

Polar Bear Dip For The Cure

1/1, 3pm, Charles Mill Lake, 1277A St Rt 430, Mansfield (park entrance is located near the junction of St Rt 430 and 603 near Mifflin)

Celebrate the new year with an exhilarating swim at the 6th annual Polar Bear Dip for the Cure. Dip to be held starting at 3pm at Charles Mill Lake Beach. More than 300 people participated last year with donations and proceeds for the benefit of the American Cancer Society. There is no registration, just show up. First Friday: Cold as Ice

1/4, 5:30-10pm, Canton Arts District, Downtown Canton

This monthly (the first Friday of every month, year ‘round) party in the downtown Canton Arts District features themed music, performance and visual arts events, and always a few surprises for adults and children. First Friday begins with a First Stop at the Canton Museum of Art at 5:30pm, followed by the full-out event downtown from 6-10pm, rain or shine.
