The expanded Technical Engineering Centre and Greater China Solution Engineering Centre in Shanghai together provide products and solutions tailored to the specific needs of fast-growing customers in Asia. In recent years, the Chinese automation market has been growing at a record pace. Festo is investing heavily in China in order to benefit from the country’s growth and gain market share in China and Asia. Festo supports its international and Chinese customers with manufacturing, automation and training solutions by expanding both its capability and capacity in sales, production, material flow as well as research and development.
In the region for the region

Festo has been enjoying double-digit growth rates in China for many years. “China already has the world’s largest domestic market, the highest industrial output and the biggest automotive market. As a result the country will also be the world’s largest market for automation technology in the coming years”, says JJ Chen, General Manager of Festo Greater China.

The clear trend among the country’s domestic manufacturers is about moving from manual labour towards automated production processes. “This offers tremendous growth opportunities, which we are already taking advantage of and are set to continue in the coming years.” stresses JJ Chen. And he adds: “Customers in Asia expect the same excellent level of service and delivery that we provide in Europe.” With the spirit of “in the region for the region”, Festo has reinforced its foundation for future growth in China.

Regional product development

In order to meet the requirements of customers in these fast growing markets and to provide customised products and services perfectly tailored to the customers’ specific applications, Festo founded the Greater China Solution Engineering Centre. Moreover, the global player in automation technology started the expansion of the Technical Engineering Centre China (TEC) in 2012, strengthening the research and development capabilities for customised products and solutions. The TEC will see an effective scale-up in product and system development which will enable it to reduce the lead time of product innovation. The expanded TEC will start operation in autumn 2013.

With customised products as well as local project engineers and engineering support specialists, Festo is able to strengthen its relationship with customers offering on-time delivery and reliable services to more than 25,000 companies in the region.
Skilled staff for companies in China

Since starting up in China in 1985, Festo Didactic has delivered a variety of engineering support to more than 600 education partners, universities, vocational institutes and industrial training centres in Greater China – with everything from basic courses to turn-key equipment for mechatronic learning centres.

In 1990, Festo and the BaoSteel Group worked together to create a training centre for the steel company’s staff. This led to a new way of cooperation between a multinational company in pneumatics and a state-owned enterprise. To date, Festo has founded training centres in partnership with many large and medium-sized companies, meeting the specific requirements of customers for training their employees. Every year Festo Didactic offers around 40 public training courses that are suitable for training staff of small-sized enterprises. “With our Didactic activities, we can help our European, international as well as Asian customers train their staff in Asia,” explains Desmond Teo, Head of Region Asia Pacific at Festo.
Practice-oriented engineers with multicultural background

Festo uses its strength in the field of industrial automation to work closely together with a number of universities, such as Tongji University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Chongqing University. Activities include setting up scholarships, offering education and development of promising people, as well as investing in the infrastructure of the partnership universities, helping them to improve their capabilities in major courses, research and preliminary application research.

In 2004, Festo and the Sino-German University of Applied Science, affiliated with Tongji University (CDHAW), jointly launched the “Sino-German University Program”, designed to introduce Germany’s successful tertiary education system (“Fachhochschule” or “University of Applied Science”) in China. It focuses on science application and aims to foster practice-oriented engineers with a multicultural background. After three years CDHAW, students will spend their final year working at the partnership university in Germany. They will receive a degree from both universities. A total of 450 students have graduated so far, of which 80% had dual degrees. The graduates are highly valued by industrial companies in both China and Germany.
Dual system for vocational training for skilled technicians

Many companies in China have experienced considerable problems recruiting skilled employees. Festo is exporting Germany’s successful “dual” vocational and tertiary education system, educating skilled technicians in accordance with specific needs. As a global leading industry vocational education and training organisation, Festo sees a great market demand in China.

In cooperation with the German Chamber of Commerce Abroad (AHK), Jinan Vocational College and three European companies, Festo launched the dual vocational education system in China in 2011. It is the first full-scale training centre Festo has established outside of Germany. It includes a fully equipped fitter room, traditional mechanical and CNC workshop, a control technique room – consisting of pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical control techniques – as well as training rooms for mechatronics systems equipped with Festo Didactic equipment, computer skills, SAP and metrology.
In 2013, 70 apprentices started their three-year vocational training with on-the-job training in workshops. After their study, the apprentices can expect to take on highly qualified jobs at Festo or the partner companies.
Solutions tailored to customer needs

For years, Festo’s business in China has been growing at a speed above the market growth rate. “In China, Festo is supporting a great number of large international accounts from industry segments that cover all of our core businesses. The most important industry segments for Festo China are the automotive, tyre/rubber as well as the food and beverage industries. We provide solutions that are perfectly tailored to the specific requirements of customers. Therefore, Festo has expanded the support and service engineering teams in all branch offices,” says JJ Chen.

“Demand for Festo products and services, as well as our Didactic offerings, is booming. Energy-efficient solutions for green manufacturing and urban solutions in the field of water/waste water have never been more popular. Through strategic investments in recent years, Festo has strengthened its foundation in terms of infrastructure and personnel for future growth in China and to better meet the demands of the Chinese market,” explains JJ Chen.
Structure in line with regional focus

“The Asia Pacific region is Festo’s fastest growing region,” says Desmond Teo. Its headquarters are in Singapore and Shanghai. It is divided into five business clusters covering 14 countries or areas with approximately 100 sales offices assisting over 25,000 customers in the region. There are two Regional Service Centres (RSC) – one in Singapore (RSC ASEAN) and another in Jinan/China (RSC China). The region has got three factories called Global Production Centres (GPC): the GPC Jinan and the GPC Shanghai in China and the GPC Bangalore in India. Customised solutions are developed in three Application Centres – in Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore. The total number of employees is approximately 3,000.
