1.Organisation - Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE)

Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) is a university that has been conceived as a bold experiment that aims at transforming teacher education in India. Along with regular teaching and education, several new and exciting experiments in the field of teacher education are being conceived at IITE.
At IITE we have committed ourselves to the vision of facilitating Integral Education of a Teacher - encompassing the harmonious development of the physical, intellectual, creative as well as reflective dimensions of an individual. Some of our focus areas include the application of different multiple intelligences models – both ancient and modern; and research into the physical, vital-emotional and mental-intellectual aspects of human development.

2.Subject Area – Educational Philosophies

IITE seeks to bring together the best from the past, present and future – merging best practices from India’s centuries old guru-shishya tradition with the latest pedagogical approaches developed in the west. From India, we seek inspiration from the educational eco-systems conceptualised by Shri Aurobindo, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekanand, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and Dayanand Saraswati - each of which are unique and empowering in their own right. The quest of knowledge as detailed in the Taitteriya Upanishad is also a guiding principle.
A similar understanding of the educational philosophies of key thinkers in the Western tradition is being developed – which is to be the main focus area of this internship. While not exhaustive, the list of stalwarts to be studied may include any seven of these: Plato, Dewey, Rousseau, Pestalozzi Bertrand Russel, Howard Gardner, Friedrich Froebel, Jean Piaget, and Paulo Freire.

3.Intern Role

The intern will be required to study the educational philosophies of key thinkers in the western tradition of teaching and education; build the understanding gained into teaching-learning material, and finally deliver the same to a class of 100 student-teachers at IITE through online lectures.
While it is not binding, we recommend this project being undertaken by a team of at least 2 interns.

4.Project Deliverables

Deliverable 1: In-depth analysis of the primary dimensions and philosophies of educational thought leaders in the western school of thinking. The stalwarts covered could include about seven thinkers from Plato, Dewey, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Bertrand Russel, Howard Gardner, Friedrich Froebel, Jean Piaget, and Paulo Freire; though others could be added if needed. The key principles of each respective pedagogy should be understood and summarized, followed by a critical evaluation of its weaknesses, as well as continued relevance.

Deliverable 2: Develop a comprehensive set of study material based on the analysis done above, covering at least the following dimensions:

  • Biographical introduction of the philosopher

  • His/Her history – the time and context in which he was writing

  • His/Her main contribution to the field of education

  • His/Her 3 to 5 key points regarding education

  • The limitations of his thoughts

  • The continued relevance of his/her thoughts

  • Some future lines of research

The material will need to be made simple and accessible to 18-22 year old students, assuming no pre-knowledge or understanding. Creative use of various forms of media (presentations, videos, graphs, lecture notes etc) is encouraged to ensure the same.

Deliverable 3: Conduct 5 online lectures of one hour and twenty minutes each, on any five of the thought leaders covered above – using the study material developed to explore each pedagogy in detail. The intern will need to ensure she is able to communicate and engage with students coming from a very different cultural environment; as well as having little or no background in such philosophies and schools of thought. She will also need to take into account the limitations of online delivery, devising ways and means of ensuring the interactive and experiential style of learning despite the existing physical distance.

  • Deadline: once a week; from Week 8 – Week 12

  • Length: 1 hour and 20 minutes per lecture

5.Enabling Resources

5. i. Mentors

Dr. Sunil Sagar will be the Mentor for this particular DIP @ IITE project, and will be the main point of contact for the intern. He is a faculty member at IITE. He holds a doctorate in translation studies. He can be contacted at

Mode and frequency of communications with intern:

  1. Formal : Weekly basis, Every Monday 11:00 am, IST

  2. Informal : as per requirement of project and interns, From 10.30 am to 6.30 pm, IST

  3. Modes : Skype, Yahoo messenger, Emails, Elluminate, Team Viewer, Google docs

This learning is a joint undertaking of the student at HGSE and mentor at IITE. However, once the learning objectives and deliverables are clear it will primarily be the intern’s responsibility to meet the given requirements.

5. ii. Resource Persons

Beyond the mentor, interns will also have the opportunity to tap into the experience and expertise of distinguished faculty and staff members at IITE, as well as several domain experts and well-known exponents of the field of education connected with the university. These include:

Prof Kireet Joshi studied Philosophy and Law in Bombay University. He was responsible for the establishment of Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Educational Research at Auroville.
In 1976, he was requested to advise the Government of India, particularly, to impart dimension of value-education to the entire system. Subsequently, in the same year he was appointed Educational Adviser to the Government of India and later as Special Secretary in the Ministry of Human Resource Development. He played a major role in the establishment and development of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research. Prof. Kireet Joshi has written extensively on a number of subjects pertaining to culture, science, spirituality, yoga and education.

Prof. A. N. Maheshwari is Advisor, IITE and Former Chairman, National Council for Teacher Education. He has the distinction of working at reputed institutions of education in India. He served as Chairperson of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), INDIA. He was the Joint Director, National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) - 1994 to 1999. He served as the Vice Chancellor, Cochin University of Science and Technology. He also gave his services as Principal, Regional College of Education, Mysore.
Mrs Jayanti Ravi, IAS, is serving as Commissioner, Higher Education, Government of Gujarat. She has been a Mason Fellow, the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. An alumnus of the London School of Economics, UK, she has worked as an independent faculty at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. She has worked on Technology enhanced learning and e-governance in the doctoral thesis.

6.Why DIP @ IITE?

IITE provides the interns not only a place where they can learn and earn a credit towards their education but also a place from where they can immediately start making an impact towards advancing human development through education and get an immediate feedback for their intervention.
One very special feature of the objectives of IITE is that it aims at training the teachers of tomorrow based on globally benchmarked curriculum with ideas gleaned from the fusion of the intellectual traditions of India and the West.
