Integrated Science April 6- 10 enrichment activity

Begin by filling out this table the best you can. If you don't know, leave it blank, and, hopefully, you will have gained the knowledge to fill it in after doing the other activities.

Identify the three main fossil

fuels.

1 Coal

2 Oil

3 natural gas

Describe how each is formed.

Coal is formed when dead plant matter decomposes into peat and turns into coal under the influence of heat and pressure of deep burial for millions of years.

At temperatures between 90 and 160 degrees Celsius, the kerogen turns into oil and natural gas.

Natural gas occurs deep within the earth by decomposition of organic matter. Dead sea plants and animals and burrows Over time, this substance will become more and more layers shrinking. When this organic substance is pressurized, it will decompose into hydrocarbons and transform into natural gas or oil.

List its main use.

The most significant uses of coal are in electricity generation, steel production, cement manufacturing and as a liquid fuel.

Oil fuels the cars, trucks and planes that underpin modern economies and lifestyles.

Natural gas is an ingredient used to make fertilizer, antifreeze, plastics, pharmaceuticals and fabrics.

List an advantage of using this fossil fuel

It provides many kinds of energies.

Oil has one of the highest energy densities which means that a small amount of oil can produce a large amount of energy.

Natural gas is environmentally friendly because it burns cleaner than other fossil fuels. It's safer and easier to store when compared to other fossil fuels. Natural gas is extremely reliable, unlike electric power that can be knocked out during a storm.

LIst a disadvantage of using this fossil fuel

Coal offers a rather low capital investment.

Some of the oil goes to the ocean, killing animals and dirting the water.

One of the biggest disadvantage of natural gas is that it emits carbon dioxide which is bad for our atmosphere. Constant introduction of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere will lead to climate change and also global warming.

List 3 things you learned from the video.

1. The big advantage of all of them is that they have a huge amount of energy.

2. The big disadvantage is the environmental impact they are having on our planet.
3. Coal is cheap.
