BSN APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMISSION

EFFECTIVE MARCH 1, 2013

Admission to Oakland University is required in order to be eligible for admission to the School of Nursing. Contact the Office of Admissions, 101 North Foundation Hall, (248) 370-3360 for information.

Grades for transfer courses do not appear on the Oakland University transcript. However, for the purposes of admission to the School of Nursing, grades for pre-nursing courses taken at other institutions are included in the pre-nursing GPA. Letter grades are converted as follows: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7.

ADMISSION CRITERIA: Completion of minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.


  1. Complete the following required pre-nursing courses or transfer equivalents with a grade of at least a 2.8 and maintain a minimum overall pre-nursing grade point average of 3.2 or “B+” (on a 4.0 scale). These courses will be used in the calculation of your pre-nursing grade point average.

BIO 121 Clinical Anatomy and Physiology (5)

(OR BIO 205 and BIO 206 and BIO 207 – Human Anatomy, Lab and Human Physiology)

Note: A maximum of 5 credits for this course will be used in the calculation of your

Pre-nursing grade point average if you have completed equivalent coursework.

CHM 104 Introduction to Chemical Principles (4)

CHM 201 Introduction to Organic and Biological Chemistry (4)

PSY 100 Foundations of Contemporary Psychology (4)



  1. Complete one of the following courses with a minimum grade of 2.8. The grade for the philosophy course you have completed will not be included in the calculation of your pre=-nursing grade point average.

PHL 101 Introduction to Philosophy (4)

PHL 102 Introduction to Logic (4)

PHL 103 Introduction to Ethics (4)

PHL 107 Introduction to Symbolic Logic (4)

PHL 204 Introduction to Ancient Greek Philosophy (4)

PHL 206 Introduction to Early Modern Philosophy (4)


  1. Complete the following course with a minimum grade of 2.8. The grade for WRT 160 (RHT 160) is not included in the pre-nursing grade point average calculation.

  1. Complete MTH 061 (or MATH 011) with a minimum grade of 3.2 This requirement is waived for students who receive a score of 18 or higher on the mathematics subsection of the American College Test (ACT) or who have taken an Oakland University Placement Test and have placed into MTH 062, MTH 012 or higher. The math grade received is not included in the pre-nursing grade point average calculation.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES:

Students who wish to apply for admission must complete and submit the attached application.

Students are admitted to the School of Nursing on a competitive basis. In addition to the admission requirements listed, the applicant must be in good standing in the university (minimum overall GPA of 2.0). NOTE: Completion of minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the nursing program. Openings are filled with applicants best qualified to succeed in the nursing program. Depending on the applicant pool, preference for admission is given to students who have completed five or more pre-nursing courses (excluding MTH 061 or MTH 011) at Oakland University with a grade point average of 3.2 or better. Pre-nursing courses which are satisfied by Advanced Placement (AP) equivalent courses will be counted toward the preference for admission. Please refer to OU Advanced Placement (AP) Policies for approved equivalents (Oakland.edu/appolicies).

Applicants should either submit the application packet to the School of Nursing in person or via

the United States Postal Service (Trackable mail is strongly recommended www.usps.com )

OAKLAND UNIVERSITY APPLICANTS:

If you submitted your SON application prior to receiving grades in the classes in which you are currently enrolled and you are an Oakland University student, your official Oakland University grades will be inserted on your application as soon as they are available.



TRANSFER STUDENT APPLICANTS:

If you submitted your SON application prior to receiving grades in the classes in which you are currently enrolled, you must send updated official transcripts verifying completion of pre-nursing coursework to the School of Nursing at the address listed above. In addition, transfer students are responsible for submitting official transcripts directly to the Oakland University Academic Records Office in 102 O’Dowd Hall upon completion of courses to update your Transfer Credit Evaluation records at the University.



SECOND DEGREE APPLICANTS:

If you submitted your SON application prior to receiving grades in transfer courses in which you are currently enrolled, you need to send official updated transcripts to the School of Nursing Advising Office at the address listed above.



REPEATING COURSES:

Students may repeat a course to improve the grade earned in a prior enrollment, but they must do so at Oakland University if the course was taken previously at Oakland University. The limit is three attempts for any individual course, excluding drops and withdrawals. The repeat course must be taken on the same grading basis (numeric or pass/fail) as the first attempt. Students should be aware that the most recent grade will be the grade of record regardless of whether it is the highest grade earned.

Applicants who have been dismissed from a nursing program at another institution or have two grades below 2.5 in nursing courses from another institution must submit with this application, a statement of explanation that includes current status as a nursing student. This statement will be reviewed prior to consideration for admission to the Oakland University School of Nursing.

NOTE: If you have placed out of a course due to your performance on an Oakland University placement exam, ACT, or other approved instrument, enter “placed out” in the space provided for the grade and submit verification with application. If you have repeated a course at Oakland University, the most recent grade will be used in GPA calculation.
