At this point an awareness of the issues is more important than an answer.
12 If the timescale put forward in the Jewish Scriptures is believed and the universe was created in 6 days, then there would be very little reconciliation between science and religion. However, if the centre of the creation myth is not taken literally and God’s action is what is important, then there is no reason why science could not be seen us uncovering the creative actions of God on a different timescale.
13 A myth such as that of creation can be fairly easily seen and interpreted in the light of our more sophisticated understanding of the universe. However, a story with mythological elements such as Beowulf or the Arthurian myths needs more study. You may find, for example, that the Beowulf story was told at a time when the people needed to aspire to be heroes whereas in the Arthurian myths it is chivalry that needs to be encouraged. So with all myths you need to look for the meaning or agenda behind the story being told.
