Indian Removal Webquest

As we continue our discussion about the Early Republic and Constitution, we must address the plight of Native Americans. With the strengthening of the federal government and settlers wanting to move westward, Native Americans were forced to leave the homes that they had occupied for generations.

Section 1: Thomas Jefferson Defines American Indian Policy Excerpt

What is Jefferson’s Indian Policy during his 1st Annual Message to Congress?

What does he argue led to a decrease in numbers?

In a private letter to Governor of Indiana, William Henry Harrison, Jefferson wrote this:

In this way our settlements will gradually circumscribe and approach the Indians, and they will in time either incorporate with us a citizens or the United States, or remove beyond the Mississippi. The former is certainly the termination of their history most happy for themselves; but, in the whole course of this, it is essential to cultivate their love. As to their fear, we presume that our strength and their weakness is now so visible that they must see we have only to shut our hand to crush them, and that all our liberalities to them proceed from motives of pure humanity only. Should any tribe be foolhardy enough to take up the hatchet at any time, the seizing the whole country of that tribe, and driving them across the Mississippi, as the only condition of peace, would be an example to others, and a furtherance of our final consolidation.

Explain the role that the federal government played in removing the Native Americans.

What states did the Cherokee occupy?

Describe the plight of the Seminole.

Section 6: Robert Lindneux’s Trail of Tears image

Examine Lindneux’s depiction (1942) of the Trail of Tears. As there are no actual surviving images from the trail that exist, Lindneux attempts to recreate the events of the trail.

Write down what catches your attention and how this connects to what you have studied thus far about the removal of the tribes.

Section 7: Conclusion:

Pick one of the preamble sections that we have studied and make an argument for how the Indian Removal applies. Include specific evidence to support your argument.
