South Asia Region


              1. The seven member countries of SAARC (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Maldives) signed the Agreement on South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) in the year 2004 which was joined by Afghanistan as the eighth member in 2007. The signing of the SAARC Agreement on Trade in Services (SATIS, 2010) has deepened the engagement. In addition, India has bilateral trade agreements providing preferential market access to Bhutan and Nepal, a preferential trade agreement (PTA) with Afghanistan (2003), and a free trade agreement with Sri Lanka (1998) which is being expanded into a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) covering trade in services and investment.
