Down with
King Andrew!
vs.
Hooray for
Old Hickory!
You’re hired! Welcome to the wonderful, challenging world of politics! Today you will begin work on a competitive campaign either for, or against incumbent President Jackson.
In the first half of class today you will meet in a small special-interest group to evaluate a specific event in Andrew Jackson’s presidency. After that, you will bring your expertise to a larger group (meeting with other special interest groups) to prepare a political debate over the virtues and wickedness of President Jackson’s administration. Is “King Andrew” an out-of-hand, power hungry tyrant? Or is he the champion of the common man, “Man of the people”? Your research and campaign will decide the truth.
Your group’s ideas will be presented in a debate format tomorrow. Each team will begin with an opening assessment of Andrew Jackson as president and the debate will continue in point- counterpoint, or “Yeah, but…” fashion. Good luck!
