Week 2, Due Monday, 8/22
Explain why the Anasazi and the Mississippian societies were considered civilizations. Identify the specific features that demonstrate this.
Week 3, Due Monday, 8/29
Identify and explain the driving forces behind European exploration.

Explain the method used by Spain when establishing foreign settlements in the Americas.


Week 4, Due Wednesday, 9/7
What were the driving forces behind England’s expansion to the Americas?

Be specific as possible and identify and explain a minimum of three factors.


Week 5, Due Monday, 9/12
The Causes of the War, 1675-1676
Using the documents provided in your text: Comparing American Voices, pp64-65, answer the following questions:

  • In specific terms, what did the magistrates of Massachusetts Bay believe to be the prime causes of the war?

  • Make an argument for when the war began. Which documents provide the most compelling evidence and why?

Note: Identify any indirect or direct citations from the documents; i.e. according to Easton …. or use quotation (“) marks when using a direct citation.

ASSIGNMENT
Based on the information presented in the lecture, construct an outline detailing the social and economic structures in the British American Colonies. Make sure you construct an outline that could be used to write an essay. This is not an essay, but an OUTLINE. Please make sure you follow something close to this format:
I Introduction – (Paragraph 1)


  • Introduce your topic

  • Provide a thesis statement – present an argument

    • Take a position on this topic

      • The British North American Colonies were diversified OR

      • The British North American Colonies lacked diversification OR

      • The British North American Colonies had complex social and economic structures OR simple etc…

II Supporting paragraph one – social structure (Paragraph 2)

  • Present your detail to support your thesis for this topic

    • List the information points you will expand upon in your essay

III Supporting paragraph two – economic structure (Paragraph 3)

  • Present your detail to support your thesis for this topic

    • List the information points you will expand upon in your essay

IV Conclusion, final paragraph (Second Part of Paragraph 3 or New Paragraph, 4)

    • Re-State your thesis

      • List the points from supporting paragraphs that support your thesis or argument. – This should be a list for this outline format

        • These will be your strongest supporting point or points – list for the outline.

Using the outline you prepared for the social and economic structures of the British North American colonies, construct your final essay.
Week 8, Due Wednesday, 10/5
Explain why the 1765 Stamp Act and 1773 Tea Act were received so negatively in the colonies. Describe and explain the colonials’ response to these measures.
Three extra credit points will be added to those essays that attach a thorough outline.

Read the Declaration of Independence provided in the ‘Documents’ section in the back of your text. After you have carefully read this document complete the following:


  1. Provide two direct citations (quotes) that illustrate the influence of the Enlightenment and Civic Humanism.

  2. When, according to Jefferson, is it a peoples’ “right” and/or “duty” to “throw off” or reject their government?

  3. Jefferson includes a lengthy list of “repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these states”. - Provide two citations from the list and identify the policy or “Act” it is referring to.

  4. Under whose name and authority does Jefferson cite when at the end of the document he states the intention of independence or separation?
