Evelyn Beale (nee Maclaren), recollects her memories of evacuation with her younger sister to Norfolk and the then Cheadle, Staffordshire, with particular references to the resistance to evacuation, her impressions of her billet, clothing and hygiene in Norfolk, life in the country in winter, her schooling, leisure time, billeting difficulties on being moved to Cheadle, Stratfordshire, the new strictly Christian billet, visits from family, schooling and finally her reaction to returning home and the evacuation of younger sister to Ely, Cambridgeshire.
