| 10. Research Approach
The study applies a qualitative approach. Qualitative data is defined as data that cannot be measured or counted. It is defined as data that describes something. Qualitative data is typically collected through Qualitative Research Methods e.g semi structured and focus group interviews, document analysis and observation. The advantage of this approach is that qualitative research is useful and appropriate for answering some types of research questions that other methods, i.e., quantitative research, are not very good at answering and it provides a more in-depth understanding of a topic than quantitative data. Qualitative research questions are often open-ended and invite respondents to share their thoughts and feelings on a subject. The qualitative research design, for example, enable researcher explores the whole pattern rather than mapping the statistical causal relationship of variables (David, 2009:5). The case study approach will be the best approach in this study because it will enable the author to conduct an in-depth exploration of phenomena, which in this study included law enforcement officers’ perceptions in combating crime. According to (Babbie & Mouton,2016:34) qualitative research is multi-method in focus, involving an interpretive, naturalistic approach to its subject matter. Similarly (Levitt, Bamberg, Creswell, Josselson, & Suárez-Orozco, 2018:89) contends that qualitative research describes a set of approaches from a natural expression or experiences of an individual, which helps analyze collected data. The proposer intends to study CCTV surveillance in natural settings, in attempting to make sense of, and interpret phenomena, in terms of the meanings people bring to them in e descriptive sense. Creswell, (2014:56) asserts that in the descriptive sense qualitative research reveals the nature of a situation, setting or process; in the interpretative sense it helps in gaining new insights, concepts and discover problems that exists in a given situation. The author believes this is the right approach because it will provide the study with the knowledge and understanding of participant’s actions in a detailed manner (Peck & Mummery, 2017:45.
