Environmental health in New Zealand

Environmental health plays a key role in the New Zealand Health Strategy, with one of the goals being to have a healthy physical environment (Minister of Health 2000). This includes reducing the adverse health effects of environmental hazards and working to ensure that all people have access to safe drinking-water supplies and effective sanitation services. Furthermore, an overall aim of the New Zealand Health Strategy is to reduce inequalities, which include environmental inequalities that affect health. For information on environmental legislation and agencies in New Zealand, see Appendix A.
