Dutch and French Colonies

New Netherland

  • Henry Hudson made land claims in North America for the Netherlands.

  • The Dutch called this land New Netherlands.

  • In 1626, the governor of New Netherland, Peter Minuit, bought Manhattan Island from the Manhattan Indians.

  • Manhattan Island is now New York.

  • He started a settlement there and called it New Amsterdam, capital of New Netherland.

  • The Dutch West India Company was an important trading company in the Netherlands.

  • The owners of the company controlled the New Netherland.

  • The company looked for settlers from other countries, no matter what their country or religion.

  • The new settlers added to the diversity to New Netherland.

  • Diversity: is the variety of people in a group.

New York

  • In 1647, Peter Stuyvesant became governor of New Netherland.

  • He was a harsh man.

  • He made laws that angered the colonists. He did not want settlers with different religious beliefs in the colony.

  • In 1664, English ships sailed to New Amsterdam to attack.

  • The settlers of New Amsterdam were unhappy with Stuyvesant and refused to fight the English.

  • The Dutch colony of New Netherland became an English colony. They called it New York.

New France

  • In the early 1600s, the French claimed what is now Canada and called it New France.

  • Its cold climate made farming difficult.

  • Most settlers were young men who worked in the fur and fishing trades.

  • Missionaries moved to New France as well.

  • A missionary: is a person who teaches his religion to others who have different beliefs.

  • Missionaries from France taught people of Canada about Catholicism.

  • Fur traders travelled throughout New France to trade with Indians.

  • Indians gave the fur to the French. In exchange, the French traded goods such as beads, tools, pots, knives, and cloth.

  • Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet thought the Mississippi might lead to the Pacific Ocean.

  • Robert La Salle claimed the Mississippi River and all the land around for France. He named this area Louisiana.
