Differences and Similarities between Health and Development

SIMILARITIES

  • Health status and development are not static – they continue to change throughout the lifespan.

  • There are different expectations for males and females in health (condition) and development (timing).

  • Health can be social, so can development

  • Health can be physical, so can development

  • Both health and development are affected by genetic factors

  • Both health and development are affected by environmental factors

  • There can be individual variation in health, and also in development

  • Both early health and development have an important effect on later life.

DIFFERENCES

  • Health is mental – development discerns between emotional and intellectual

  • Health usually declines as the lifespan continues, or as the human moves into the latter part of the lifespan. Development doesn’t, it continues and becomes increasingly complex.

  • Health is more likely to be optimal / maximum during the early part of the lifespan- up to early adulthood, but development is optimal / improved later in life.

  • Everyone moves through the same developmental sequence – it’s predictable, health is not.
