James Smith, 1780-1861, head of the Smith family listed herein, migrated

from the vicinity of Bladesnburg, VA, now part of Washington, D.C.

According to the story passed on through succeeding generations, James

Smith's father, John, was murdered and scalped on the James River in

Virginia by the Indians.

The whereabouts of the rest of the family has not been established

although the area of Bedford County has several records of Smiths in

quantity being in the area. James Smith (1737-1811) and his "Black Boys"

attacked the British on their way to sell whiskey and rifles to the

Indians at Pittsburgh in 1765. This attack made on Sideling Hill is

recorded in Swanson's book, "The First Rebel," which wa also made into a

movie, "Alleghany Uprising." Zack's Ridge, still bearing this name, the

home of Zachariah Smith, attests to the fact that Smiths were in this

region along with the first settlers.

James Smith's move to southern Pennsylvania must have occurredin the

late 1790's or at latest, 1800. His marriage probably occurred in the

early 1800's as his first born, John Smith (Preacher John), arrived on

July 17, 1803.

Bedford County tax records for 1823 show James Smith as having 2

horses, 3 cattle and warrants valued at $173.00. Tax, 69 cents. James

Smith purchased 5 tracts of land along Sideling Hill Creek and on top of

Town Hill, his land totalling 470 acres as listed in the 1843 tax

record. Tax $6.74.

The 1850 U.S. Government Census lists House No. 43 as occupied by

Jas. Smith, farmer, age 70, and Naomi, his wife, age 74. Also living in

the same house were Elizabeth Seward, age 16, and Lot Blankly, male, age

4. It is interesting to note that with the exception of J. Olley Murphy,

who was apparently deceased by 1850, all the rest of the eight males and

three females of Jas. Smith homestead--Sarah and Henry Smith, House No.

39; James Smith, No. 43; Harvey, No. 44; Harrison, No. 45; Matthew, No.

46; Morgan, No. 47; Priscilla Smith Wigfield, No. 48; Gideon, No. 49;

Emmanuel, No. 70; and Hestor Smith Morse, No. 73.

James Smith died in 1861 leaving no will. The estate was divided by

appraisal, protions of the acreage being purchased by John, Gideon,

Emmanuel, and Henry Smith, husband of Sarah Smith. After the widow's

legal share each child received $47.93. James Smith was buried on his

farm, and a suitable stone monument was placed thereon by Bertha Shipley,

great-granddaughter.
