Notes for MARGARET ANN BROWN:

[Hargraves 2.FTW]

James Knox Polk Hargraves, 1844-1900, a son in law of Margaret Ann Brown, husband of Nanna

Watkins, told his son, Robert Mace Hargraves that his Grandmother Margaret was a full blood

Cherokee Indian. This information was passed on to my parents, James E. and Nadine Hargraves

in 1931, and was passed on to me, James E. Hargraves, Jr. in 1945. All of the children of James Knox

Polk Hargraves and Nannie Watkins were told of this heritage and the information was passed down

through their generations also, so that today it is common knowledge among their descendents.

The descendents of James Knox Polk Hargraves and Sarah E. Bonner are also aware of this heritage.

James was next door neighbor to Evan and Margaret Watkins for about 20 years.

Notes for MILLER WATKINS:

[Hargraves 2.FTW]

The Fort Pillow Confederate Cemetary was moved to a location near Memphis, Tennessee.
The military records of Miller Watkins did not survive the war. His unit is unknown.

He died at Fort Pillow, Tennessee and was buried at the Confederate Cemetary at the Fort.

The following Confederate Regiments are known to have served at Fort Pillow, Tennessee.
The 11th Arkansas Infantry, November, 1861-January, 1862.

The 12th Arkansas Infantry, November, 1861.

The 17th Arkansas Infantry.

The 18th Arkansas Infantry.

The 19th Arkansas Infantry.

The 20th Arkansas Infantry. (during the bombardment of Fort Pillow).

The 25th Arkansas Infantry. (during the bombardment of Fort Pillow).

Forrests' Cavalry. (Nathan Bedford Forrest).

Only 3 regiments are known to have recruited soldiers in Craighead County; The 13th, 23rd and 30th

Infantry Regiments.

The 23rd and 30th Regiments are not known to have operated in Tennessee. The 13th Regiment

was in Tennessee for most of its' first year of operations and was in the western part of Tennessee

at the battle of Shiloh.

Although no proof exists, it is likely that Miller Watkins was in the 13th Regiment in the first year

of the war.
