"Only Jesus Christ could take a few loaves of bread and feed the thousands ... Only Jesus Christ could solve problems such as these." - Mikhail Gorbachev

On describing the problems posed to him with the breakup of the 15 republics of the Soviet Union.

"Gentlemen, comrades, do not be concerned about all you hear about Glasnost and Perestroika and democracy in the coming years. They are primarily for outward consumption. There will be no significant internal changes in the Soviet Union, other than for cosmetic purposes. Our purpose is to disarm the Americans and let them fall asleep. We want to accomplish three things:

One, we want the Americans to withdraw conventional forces from Europe.

Two, we want them to withdraw nuclear forces from Europe.

Three, we want the Americans to stop proceeding with Strategic Defense Initiative."

“I am not ashamed to admit that I am a Communist, and will be one when I go to another world.”
(Mikhail Gorbachev. As quoted by Dmitry Mikheyev, The Rise and Fall of Gorbachev (Indianapolis, IN Hudson Institute, 1992. p.47).

“We see socialism as a system of true equality of all actions and nationalities, a system in which they are assured social and spiritual advancement and mutual enrichment, in which there is no room for any strife between nations, for nationalist and chauvinist prejudices, and in which internationalism

and the fraternity of nations rule supreme.”
(Mikhail Gorbachev, Documents and Materials, p 92).

“I want to say categorically...that we shall continue to develop all truly socialist values, and firmly eliminate everything that distorts revolutionary theory and the image of socialism."

"The threat of environmental crisis will be the 'international disaster key' that will unlock the New World Order."

[Mikhail Gorbachev, quoted in "A Special Report: The Wildlands Project Unleashes Its War On Mankind", by Marilyn Brannan, Associate Editor, Monetary & Economic Review, 1996, p. 5.]

Says Gorbachev: "I want to say the main thing. Perestroika is leading the country out of its totalitarian state and to democracy, to freedom, to openness, to glasnost and all that is connected therewith. It is putting a stake on a gradual, evolutionary way of transformation of our system into a different system. It means we needed another ten to fifteen years of reforms, it was necessary that we gain experience for a long while yet and slowly. That it was necessary to create both a new political system and a new political infrastructure, to create a new market and socially oriented economy" (quoted from Mikhail Gorbachev's Internet press conference, February 27, 2001).

Let us not forget Mikhail Gorbachev's feelings on the subject: "Praise undeserved is scandal in disguise." (Washington 83)

If people don't like Marxism, they should blame the British Museum.

Mikhail Gorbachev Perestroika - New Thinking for Our Country and the World 1988

We are not abandoning our convictions, our philosophy or traditions, nor do we urge anyone to abandon theirs.
