The Marco Polo Project

Business, engagement and communications officer

Company description

We are a young and vibrant not-for-profit organisation with a passion for connecting the world through language and social media. We strive to provide a dynamic, flexible and supportive work environment where each individual can explore their skills and talents.

We developed and run an online platform to improve global understanding of China and Mandarin language proficiency. We crowd-source the translation of contemporary Chinese writing into European languages, and provide a motivating tool for intermediary learners to practice translation online.

The project was born out of a desire to help people achieve their language learning goals, link Chinese language speakers and learners around the world, and build understanding and dialogue with China. We were also curious to discover what Chinese writers are saying, and wanted to make this exploration a collective adventure.

Our website is under ongoing development and is available in beta-version at

We are now looking to expand and grow the organisation and are offering two very competitive internship positions to take on the challenge of this growth, as detailed below.

As a successful applicant, you will be friendly, enthusiastic and motivated, able to work independently and as part of a diverse team. You will be punctual, professional and able to work to deadlines.

Language skills: A working knowledge of English is required for both positions. A working knowledge of written Mandarin Chinese is essential for one of the two positions, and advanced written English is essential for one of the two positions.

Remuneration: Positions are on a volunteer basis, although some in-kind benefits may be applicable.

Work Environment: Interns are able to work in our office in central Melbourne, Australia, or operate via video link from their preferred workspace.

Interns in this position will report to (either in person or virtually) the CEO of the company. While some technical support may be available, intern will be required to work on their own computer.

The interns will work to achieve personal/individual goals, as well as collaboratively to achieve team goals.

If necessary, performance and effort will be assessed in order to contribute credit toward a higher degree programme of study, subject to approval from your institution.

Tenure is for a minimum of 4 weeks, and typically 12 weeks. Possibilities to extend internship duration above 12 weeks can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis. Work will be on a part-time basis (.4); flexible work arrangements are also possible.
