Chicago History Writing #2: Native American

Journal/Diary or Drawings

DUE DATE: Monday, October 7, 2013

POINT VALUE: 100 points

  1. In class we have discussed Chs. 1and 2 in City of Big Shoulders about early Chicago, especially the interactions between Native American tribes and white settlers (French, British, and American).

  2. For this assignment you are to create a journal/diary imagining that you were a Native American living in the Chigagou area from 1673 to 1830; OR create 4 drawings on 8.5 X 11 paper illustrating Native Am. Experiences from the same time period.

  3. The requirements for your journal/diary or drawings are as follows:

  • Minimum of two pages hand-written (journal/diary)and done in FIRST PERSON; or FOUR pages for the drawings (done separately on 8.5 X 11 white paper—NOT notebook paper).

  • Done neatly—with no scratchouts and spelling and grammar errors. (This includes any captions that go with the drawings.)

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the Natives and whites interacted with each other—both positive and negative—and how your tribe interacted with other tribes.

  • Mention SPECIFIC details from history—including names of Native American tribes, dates certain events occurred, and some general information about the events as well.

  • If you choose to create some drawings: DO include some text/captions/words with them to show what Native Am. tribes and/or events the drawings refer to.

  • Feel free to be creative—and make up certain names of individuals and relationships between them. But make sure that your work is as historically accurate and realistic as possible.
