Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! January 25-29, 2010 Desoto County - Literacy Events West Elementary Ongoing Events Grade K Monday, Jan. 25th Record’s Day: NO SCHOOL Tuesday, Jan. 26th Mrs. Pella (vice principal) will come and read a story to all kindergarten students. Wednesday, Jan. 27th Literacy Centers Thursday, Jan 28th Read and Walk to music Friday, Jan. 29th Third grade students will read to kindergarten students. Ongoing Events 1st grade Monday, Jan. 25th AR Stars: Students receive a star to go in the window for every passed AR test. Record’s Day: No School Tuesday, Jan. 26th AR Stars Wednesday, Jan. 27th AR Stars Thursday, Jan. 28th AR Stars Friday, Jan. 29th Starry Night Celebration: Students wear PJs and read throughout the day for a designated amount of time. Each day during the week we will keep track of how many points are earned. For each point earned we will add one link to the class chain. At the end of the week we will connect all the links from the different classes to show the total number of AR points the 5th grade has earned during the week. Students’ Choice: Students nominate books as “The Best Book I’ve Read” to be placed on a ballot. The books receiving the most votes become “The DMS Top Ten” Best Author: Teachers and students nominate their favorite authors. The names will be placed on a ballot. The authors receiving the most votes become “The DMS Top Ten” Friday, Jan. 29 Guest readers will visit classes and read aloud to the students. DeSoto County High School Monday, Jan. 25 DHS students will develop a 26 second morning announcement introducing the literacy week celebration and the post card contest. Nocatee Elementary Monday, Jan. 25 Records Day Tuesday, Jan. 26 Kindergarten: Read If You Give a Moose a Muffin and teach the children to retell the story. Make “Muffins for Mom(Dad)” 1st: Buddy read with Kindergarten 2nd: 11:00am Popcorn with Parents Day – come to your child’s classroom to read together and enjoy a popcorn treat! 3rd: Buddy read with another grade level 4th: Poetry reading 5th: Guess My Character Wednesday, Jan. 27 Kindergarten: Moms and Dads come to in to enjoy the muffins and the children retell the story to them. 1st: Buddy read with Kindergarten 2nd: 11:00am Guest Reader Day - Bring your favorite children’s book and read it aloud to your child’s class! 3rd: D.E.A.R.- Drop Everything and Read 4th: Vocabulary Bowl, Fly-Swatter-Games 5th: Invite parents to listen to students read and role play Thursday, Jan. 28 Kindergarten: From 8:00-9:00 parents are invited to come in to read a story to a small group. After the story they can create a “book reflection project”. 1st: Buddy read with Kindergarten 2nd: 11:00am Readers’ Theater Day - Visit your child’s classroom to see a Readers’ Theater performance by the class! 3rd: Muffins for Mom 4th: Character Charades 5th: “You Gotta Read This!” Friday, Jan. 29 Kindergarten: From 8:00-9:00 parents are invited to come in to listen to the children read decodable books. The children will ask the parents questions about their story. 1st: 8:00-8:45- Pajama Day/Family Partner Day 2nd: 11:00am Click, Clack, Moo Day - Read our fun story of the week with your child and participate in creative activities in the classroom! 3rd: Guess My Character 4th: Read to Succeed/AR-buddy read; sharing writing (stories students have written with other students) 5th: DEAR- Drop Everything and Read Memorial Elementary School Ongoing Events Kindergarten: Community Helpers will be visiting all week and reading to students. 1st: Dress-up as your favorite character day 2nd: Jazzy Genres- Students will rotate to different teachers to learn about different genres 3rd: Guest Readers/ DEAR 4th: Guest Readers 5th: DEAR Directory: docs docs -> Cuba I.
