CLIP - PARLIAMENT

It is too early to say whether the cases in Mexico and the US will lead to a pandemic. Scientists do not yet understand the extent to which cases in Mexico and the US are linked....

NEWS CLIP

It's 10 o'clock, this is the World Tonight with Ritula Shah. The Scottish government has confirmed the first two cases of swine flu in Britain. The disease now thought to have killed nearly 150 people in Mexico. Tonight the World Health Organisation raised its alert for swine flu by one level - two steps short of declaring a full blown pandemic.

PORTER

A little later on I will be talking to a mother whose daughter was quarantined at home yesterday, and put on antiviral medication, when she fell ill after a family holiday to Mexico.

CLIP

And on Sunday the news began to break about the outbreak of flu in Mexico and my daughter became ill and we began to think well maybe we should take this seriously.

PORTER

But first, an update on the situation. Dr Brian McCloskey is Director of the London region of the Health Protection Agency.

Brian, can you give me an overview of where we are now, how many confirmed and suspected cases are there in the UK?
MCCLOSKEY

Well at present we just have the two confirmed cases in the UK. We have a number of patients going through the testing at present, we won't have those results until tomorrow and it's inevitable that we'll have more cases.

PORTER

And those cases are the ones currently in Scotland. And you say inevitable, have you any idea at the moment - are you making any predictions - anybody?
